The Order of the Snow

A field of penitentes in the high Andes near the Chilean / Argentinean border. Penitentes are a frozen snow formation that only occurs when the dew point is always below zero. First described (in Western literature) by Darwin while crossing the Andes from Chile to Argentina, they resemble lines of monks wearing the conical headgear known as cucuruchos.
Location: Paso del Agua Negra, Chile.
